Membership in risky areas
With BP under attack for claimed negligence it got MemCom thinking about the world of risk, internal auditing and compliance  in membership bodies. A look at www.totalprofessions.com with over 270 professional bodies listed shows us a wide cross section and the challenge of differentiation. Some have expanded their entries on Total Professions to help clarify their role to prospective members.

Associations still confident about events
A survey was recently undertaken by some of the most prolific Association buyers in the country.
Between them, they host around 500 events a year with nearly 70,000 delegates attending.
Almost all the events were organised in-house with only around 27% using production companies. The use of production companies seems to be the main point of budget cuts.

Does Unison offer more than a professional association for social workers?

Here is an extract from a document on the Unison web site which MemCom has come across.
‘UNISON is a trade union 1.3 million strong representing members in all the
major public services. We have over 40,000 social workers in membership
mainly working in local authorities, NHS Trusts and the voluntary sector. We
are the main trade union recognised for social workers in the UK. We
negotiate on pay and conditions of service at national and local level and
provide individual advice and representation to social workers.
The main professional association for social workers in the UK is the British
Association of Social Workers which has around 12,000 members.

Loss of £700k at CIPR perhaps not as bad as it seems
The CIPR suffered a serious loss mainly around property issues. This is perhaps a warning to membership organisations to check their leases and delapidations clauses.

MCCA becomes MAA in a bid to boost awareness


With immediate effect from 6th August the Marketing Communications Consultants Association (MCCA) has become the Marketing Agencies Association (MAA).
They are still the same association offering the same services from the same team but feel it was time to change the associations name to reflect and clarify exactly who they are and what they do.
