‘This might sound like a frivolous question, but I'm interested to know how seriously institutions take the web. We have a Web Development Manager from our Marketing department, and several relatively senior positions within our IT Services department. But does anyone have a CWO (Chief Web Officer) or similar? Do we think things will head that way or will existing organisational structures be to strong?
RESPONSE FROM ONE GROUP USERAs a rule, the answer is "not high enough". The seriousness with which institutions claim to take the web does not match the seniority of or authority delegated to the staff in web roles.
The majority of web staff I know report to team managers either in IS or marcoms areas. Sometimes there is a more direct line to IS or marcoms directors. I think there are some exceptions where the web teams are more autonomous and their leader is at the same table as HoDs or Directors.’
